Registration for the Golf Classic
The Save A Life Golf Classic is the major fundraiser of Save A Life Group (SALG), a 501c(3) non-profit consisting of primarily organ recipients who want to "pay it forward," along with many other advocates. Saving more patients on the "waiting list" is our goal! In two years we have raised $67,500 for LifeShare Of The Carolinas, the regional Organ Procurement Organization. LifeShare has already developed two major awareness videos for viewing at all DMV offices in their 22-county region. One video focuses on teen drivers and the second on elderly drivers. Viewing them just before the examiner asks, "Do you want to be an organ donor?" has already produced some great results where more patients will be saved. Feedback after viewing them by one of our sponsors was, "How could anyone not register to be an organ donor after viewing these videos?" We feel strongly these, along with other awareness programs of Save A Life Group, LifeShare, and Donate Life will help save more of the estimated 3,500 patients on the organ transplant "waiting list" in North Carolina.
In North Carolina, the many awareness events by Donate Life, LifeShare, and groups like Save A Life Group are making a difference. In the past three years, the percentage of registered donors statewide has increased from just below 49% to 53.6%, based on Donate Life statistics, ranking NC 6th in the country of registered donors. This means that more lives are being saved! Since the Heart Prevails Law of 2007 has become law, over one million new registered donors have been added to the registry. Please say "yes" and add the "heart" to your license!
The ultimate beneficiary is the patient on the waiting list whose life can be saved through increased registration. Funds from the event are directly donated to LifeShare Of The Carolinas, who serves as the link between the donor/donor family and the patient whose life may be saved. Organ Donation Facts
The nation is losing 21 patients per day. Six patients are added to the list every hour, or one every 10 minutes. Currently over 123,000 patients are on the "waiting list" with approximately 3,200 from North Carolina. The DMV's in the State are charged with asking the question, "Would you like to be an organ donor?" when licenses are issued, or renewed. Awareness will help to increase the number of registered donors so more will say "YES".
